Especially if you grow a vegetable garden, you may associate summer with produce. Juicy, ripe tomatoes, crisp cucumber, fresh lettuce, sweet cherries and berries, and more fruits and vegetables are abundant in the summer months. Autumn, too, is a time of bounty, but what about winter? If you think there are no good options for produce in winter, you’re mistaken.
- Citrus fruits peak in winter. Try blood oranges, with their deep-red flesh and bright flavor, or lemons in different varieties. For instance, pink variegated lemons have a taste that’s less tart than other lemons, while Meyer Lemons have a lovely balance of tartness and sweetness. Mandarins, satsumas, sumo oranges, and Clementines are delicious and easy to peel, so they make for a tasty snack. Grapefruit is great for breakfast, tart with a little bit of sweetness. Tangy-sweet Cara Cara oranges have few seeds and are a great addition to smoothies. Navel oranges come in different varieties, with sweet, aromatic Heirloom Navel oranges grown from “old line” orange groves and Navel oranges from more modern lines sweet and perfect for marmalade.
- Citrus isn’t the only excellent fruit option. Passion fruit, pears, pomegranates, and persimmons are all in season during the winter months. There are seasonal winter fruits that don’t start with “p” too, like the cherimoya, red bananas, and red currants.
- Tons of vegetables tolerate the winter well. Belgian endive, Brussels sprouts, leeks, collard greens, kale, winter squashes, and sweet potato are a few of the possibilities you’ll find when you’re trying to eat seasonal produce in winter.
- Remember, fresh is not your only healthy option. It’s great to look for seasonal fruits and vegetables and make the most of what’s grown locally. However, with modern technology, you have a world of options available to you. Canned vegetables count as produce, as do 100 percent juices. The closest to fresh, though, is typically frozen. For frozen vegetables, fresh vegetables are picked when they’re perfectly ripe, then flash-frozen to preserve their natural goodness.
