NetCost Market is proud to have served our community for the past 20 years. We’ve seen our share of good times and bad, from the early days of the Internet through the times of today. Check out our history over the past 20 years.
It was the year 2000. Google was in its infancy, and the Y2K scare had been debunked. Meanwhile, Sam and Eduard Shnayder opened the first two NetCost Market locations on East 16th and 64th Streets in Brooklyn. We were founded as a supermarket specializing in providing newly immigrated communities with a taste of home—one year before Apple launched the iPod.
Less than two years after the world ushered in the new millennium, NetCost Market opened its third location in Brooklyn. It was 2002, the first year DVD players outsold VCRs. Our fourth location opened in Philadelphia in 2004, back when MySpace was the leading social media network.
Our fifth location opened in 2007 in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, followed by our Staten Island location in 2008. As our community weathered the financial crisis, we stood strong for them by providing free donations and food packages to the elderly, veterans, and those in dire need, a tradition which continues at our stores to this very day.
Several years later, NetCost Market opened its seventh location, Rego Park, Queens, in 2012. You may recall this as the year the Mars Curiosity Rover landed on Mars. Our eighth location—the second in Philadelphia—opened in 2015. It was this year that rolled ice cream, a frozen treat that originated in Thailand, was introduced to the US. There’s nothing quite like a frozen treat to conjure memories of home.
We expanded to New Jersey for the first time in 2016, with locations in Paramus and Manalapan. Two years later, our first 24/7 location opened on Ocean Avenue in Brooklyn. That year, the US imported 74.3 million pounds of quinoa, a nutrient-packed grain grown almost exclusively in South America. Quinoa went from being relatively unknown 20 years ago to being a staple at NetCost Market to this day. Vegetable quinoa salad, anyone?
Our most recent location opened in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn in 2019. Little did we know what 2020 had in store. Luckily, we’ve been through hard times before, and we’re confident we’ll make it through this challenge together!
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have launched online shopping, pickup, and delivery services this year. We continue to expand our contactless delivery areas to meet our customers’ needs during this trying time.
As a “thank you” to our customers for joining us on this journey, we are hosting some fun events throughout October:
We are also holding a contest called “Guess the Value of the Cart” now until October 20, 2020. To enter the drawing, simply fill out a ballot with your best guess. Whoever comes closest to guessing the true value of the cart wins everything inside it! We’ll announce a winner for each store location at the end of the month.
We have all had highs and lows over the past 20 years. Still, our pledge remains the same—to provide authentic, high-quality food from around the world and a comfortable, gratifying shopping experience for everyone. Shop with NetCost Market today!
