Every week on Friday night, people of the Jewish religion from all over the world gather to eat a meal marking the beginning of Shabbat, the biblical god-ordained day of rest. A traditional Friday night meal would look something like this:
- Challah is a well-known traditional Jewish food, eaten to begin the meal. This braided bread is a major part of the Shabbat tradition. It’s full of symbolism and made to commemorate the manna that fed the Jewish people as they wandered in the desert for 40 years.
- A fish course is often featured, and Gefilte Fish is an iconic option. Gefilte fish isn’t a type of fish, but rather a way to prepare fish. To make this dish, chopped fish, usually white-fleshed freshwater fish, is mixed with ingredients like onions, carrots, eggs, parsley, and matzah meal. This mixture is turned into balls, a loaf, or oval patties, then poached in broth and chilled until the meal.
- Next comes the soup course, often with a classic soup like this Matzo Ball Soup. Matzo balls are light dumplings made with matzo meal, and it’s not uncommon to have matzo balls and noodles in the same soup.
- The meat course on Shabbat is often a hot stew called Cholent (or Tcholent). That’s because cooking isn’t permitted on the sabbath, so this stew is prepared ahead of time. Other options that can be prepared ahead of time include baked chicken dishes and roasted brisket.
- Kugel is one of the more popular Jewish side dishes. Other popular sides include Roasted Vegetables, grain dishes, and salads.
- Traditional Jewish desserts served after the shabbat meal must be pareve. This means they can’t contain any meat or dairy. They can contain eggs, as long as the eggs come from kosher chickens. These Double Chocolate Gooey Brownies are an example of a pareve dessert.
